Learn More About Imperfect Progress
Teen and Young Adult Mental Health and Wellness
Imperfect Progress Counseling is a private practice owned and operated by Rebecca Tompkins, LCSW.
The practice’s mission is to be a safe space for teens and young adults to be heard and receive therapy that aligns with what each individual needs to be successful, however that may look for them.
The therapeutic approach embraced at Imperfect Progress Counseling is collaborative and eclectic, meaning it can fit into many different forms and focuses heavily on the therapeutic alliance between the client and the therapist. Many youths have trouble truly connecting with a mental health practitioner, and Imperfect Progress Counseling aims to change that while simultaneously empowering the client to take the lead in their mental health journey.

About Rebecca Tompkins, LCSW.
Rebecca (or Becky) Tompkins is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Texas. While she loves her job, it was not her initial intention. Rebecca completed her undergraduate degree in English at the University of Texas Austin and became a high school English teacher right out of college. After teaching at-risk teens at a public school in Houston and then academically driven students at a test prep company in Sugar Land, Rebecca felt like she wasn’t doing enough to help the teens and young adults of today. Regardless of where she met them and how she worked with them, Rebecca began noticing trends that impact all youths and their mental health and the serious lack of effective treatment. So, she went to graduate school and got a degree in Social Work from the University of Texas Arlington. After working in a psychiatric hospital on an adolescent unit for over 2 years, she earned her clinical license and went out on her own to try and make a difference in her own way.
Rebecca’s strengths lie in her ability to form lasting therapeutic alliances with her patients. She even has patients who have followed her since she first began her career at the hospital. Rebecca is keenly aware that when trying to make progress with a young person, trust and mutual understanding is paramount, as is recognizing that you cannot treat a youth in a vacuum and involving their parents or guardians is a necessity. As an older Millennial who has worked with teenagers since she was a teen herself, Rebecca is able to navigate the differences between parents and children while helping them come to a better level of understanding with each other. Rebecca is comfortable working with youths of all acuity levels, from students stressed out by school or college to youths who cannot seem to shake the scary thoughts that plague them daily.
Rebecca employs many different therapeutic modalities in her practice and no course of treatment is the same, though her strongest theoretical underpinnings are Dialectical Behavior Therapy and the Strengths-Based Perspective. Some patients prefer a more manual and handout-based approach, some need time to talk and be heard, and some only communicate when playing games and feeling entertained! Every client of Rebecca’s has a completely tailor-made approach and typically attends sessions weekly or biweekly. At the end of the day, the most important thing to Rebecca is for therapy to be an empowering experience for her clients and their parents.
